CHIKOL KALO IN MARCEL

The Kalo festival is celebrated in different temples between the months of November and February. In different places it is celebrated for one, two or even three days. All people take part in the festival with great enthusiasm and religious fervour. In Goa, the season of Kalo begins with the onset of the winter season. A day after celebrating the ritualistic marriage ceremony of basil plant pedestal or Tulshi vivah, the people get ready for celebrating Kalo.

When celebrating Kalo, the youth climb on each others shoulders and make human pyramids to reach a clay pot, containing yoghurt, fruits and sweets, which is kept at a height in the temple premises. Before this ritual, a folk drama known as 'Gavalan Kalo' is performed by the young artistes wherein incidents of Lord Krishna's childhood are enacted through traditional songs and dialogues. In some villages, the idol meant for the festive occasion is placed in a well-decorated chariot and this chariot is pulled by the devotees accompanied by music and singing.
On the day of Kalo the temple is decorated with flowers and in some villages, the idol of the deity meant for the festive occasion is placed in a palanquin which is taken out in a procession throughout the village. In chikal kalo the instruments used are dhol. While having bath in the mud water the people throw mud water on other people or carry them to the mud water and throw them in that mud water.

Dhangar dance is very popular in Goa. The costumes for the danghar dance is white or black colur long clothes having red strips on it but mostly those dhangar dancers prefer white clothes. It is considered a Navratri dance. Dhangars are shepherd community.  Dhangar dance is considered a Navratri dance which involves a fusion of adoration. During Navaratri ....(navaratri means nine nights of the festival)the leader of the house is on fast,he takes bath at early hours in the morning, he has to drink one cup of milk per day and prays and dances before the family deity. The dance begins with simple footwork to a slow beat accompanied to the beat of Dhol. Generally they move around the drum / dhol players during the dance.

It also has a turban on the head of each dancer. Turban is round in shape and white in colour. The dance is performed to please and worship Bira Deva or Biruba for his blessings.

Konkani Tiatr - The Stage of Goa

Tiatr is a unique form of dramatic art. It is unique because it cannot be considered a musical drama. It has music and singing but it is not a musical drama. The uniqueness of the Tiatr lies in the fact that the story of the Tiatr is based on one particular theme whereas each Kantaris based on a different subject. The plot of a Tiatr is normally divided into 6 or 7 parts, each part is called a"Pordho".In between these Pordhes there are songs which are called "Kantaram".Normally there are 2 or 3 Kantaramin between every two Pordhes. This means that there are at least 12 to 15 Kantaramin the Tiatr. In tiatr the following structure we can find a good story line, attractive songs with pleasing music and comedy linked to the play, form the basis of the Tiatr. The other aspects such as Stage Sets, Light Effects, Background music, acting etc form part and parcel of good direction. If all these ingredients are well balanced, the performance of the Tiatr is bound to be excellent. The songs –Kantaram- sung between the Pordhes of the tiatr are equally responsible for the success of the Tiatr. The songs presented in the tiatr should also be of varied nature, i.e.Solos, Duets,Trios, Quartets and so on. They should also include comedy songs. Comedy in a Tiatr is one of the specific characteristics of this dramatic form and to preserve the uniqueness of Tiatr we cannot afford to lose the comedy aspect of the Tiatr. Tiatrs have focused on the drug problem, alchoholism, the false sense of values of Goans who strike it rich in the Gulf, the fall in values that lead to the neglect of parents, the problems of inter-caste marriage and tiatrs are also based on Historical, Social, Political& Religious. The Tiatrs are based on themes which directly touch our souls.

DHALO

Dhalo is performed by women folk on the moonlit night of Hindu 'Pausha' month. This dance is performed during the week-long festivities are held at night time and the main deities propitiated on the occasion are Mother Earth and Sylvan deity, who are supposed to protect their house-holds.

Compared to Fugdi dance, this dance is slow. The songs are in
Konkani and Marathi. Normally 12 - 24 women assemble after the dinner at a pre-selected specific spot called 'Mand' in the courtyard of a house in the village.

They arrange themselves in 2 parallel rows of 12, facing each other, and in a tribal fashion form a link within themselves with an arm-around-the-back arrangement, singing in unison. Normally, two rows of women confront each other by prancing forward and backward while singing the stories of their life and the contemporary society.

The songs cover religious and social themes. The dance goes on every night for a week. On the concluding day, women sport all sorts of fancy dresses and even caricature menfolk.

GOFF- THE GOAN FOLK DANCE

Goff is an exotic confluence of colorful cultural strands. The weaving of the plait - Goff - represents the quite but conscious assimilation of the impressions left behind by several dynasties, which ruled over Goa during the past centuries.

The dance is annually presented by the peasant community in Canacona, Sanguem and Quepem taluka in the Shigmo festival which is the most popular folk festival of Goa.

It is a folk dance with cords, manifesting joy and happiness of Goan peasants after a bountiful harvest. It is performed during the Shigmo Festival in the Hindu Phalgun month.

Each dancer holds a colourful cord hanging at the centre point of the 'mand' - the place of performance – and starts dancing intricately with the others, forming a beautiful, colourful, intricate braid at the end of the first movement.

The music starts again and the dancers reverse the pattern of dancing so skillfully that the braid gets unravelled and at the end of the second movement, all the cords are loose and single once again.

There are 4 different braids of Goff. The songs sung are devoted to Lord Krishna. Ghumat, Simel and other melodic instruments accompany the dance.
